Seabed Survey with Sonobot 5 USV Ahead of Subsea Cable Installation
BUVI Scandinavia began in 2026 by conducting a seabed survey using the Sonobot 5 USV, equipped with high‑resolution side scan sonar, in preparation for an upcoming subsea power cable installation.
The Sonobot 5 USV allowed us to map the underwater environment, identifying sediment types, obstacles, vegetation, and variations in the seabed structure. Its autonomous operation ensured efficient data collection even in shallow or hard‑to‑reach areas.
Understanding the seabed conditions is essential before laying an electrical cable. Accurate seabed data helps:
Determine the safest and most stable cable route
Avoid natural obstacles, debris, or sensitive habitats
Assess risks related to erosion, slopes, or uneven terrain
Ensure long‑term reliability and protection of the cable
By combining advanced sonar technology with autonomous surveying, BUVI Scandinavia recommends Evologics Sonobot 5 USV equipped with side scan sonar or a multibeam echo sounder for all subsea cable installation projects.
Plan each mission to ensure maximum safety, precision, and environmental awareness.
